Common airMAX questions

Q) How do I manually factory reset my airMAX radio if it is up a mast? Do I have to go up and hit the reset button on the device?

  1. You can factory reset the device from the ground, as long as the PoE data cable directly attached to the device is accessible from there. Simply attach the PoE injector that came with it to the device’s Ethernet cable, power it from the injector, and use the “reset” button on the injector. This will send a factory reset signal to the airMAX device.

Q) What are the minimum configuration requirements for a Point-to-Point link using airMAX devices?

  1. At the minimum, you need to set a new password or the device’s UI access, and in wireless settings, set mode on one device to “AP” and one to “station”. Then set an SSID - it is strongly recommended that you set some form of encryption under wireless settings also.

Q) What is the maximum throughput achievable on an airMAX link?

  1. It is theoretically possible to achieve up to 450Mbps on airOS 8 devices and 144Mbps on airOS 6 devices, minus overheads.

Q) Is line of sight required to establish a Point-to-Point link using airMAX?

  1. While it is possible to establish a link through certain obstacles (like small trees or bushes for example) It is strongly recommended to have direct line-of-sight for your link to work effectively. Larger obstacles like buildings will like make a link impossible.

Q) How many Point-to-MultiPoint stations can I use on a single BaseStation using airMAX?

  1. Up to 127 stations are theoretically possible, but it is recommended to limit his to around 60, as performance above this is likely to be very poor.

Q) Can I use an airMAX AC device to provide WiFi coverage?

  1. No: Regular WiFi clients (laptops, smart phones etc) cannot connect to airOS 8 devices to access the network they are providing.

Q) Can an airMAX M series device connect to regular WiFi access points in station mode?

  1. Yes! As long as the WiFi standards and authentication method and credentials are the same, this should work.

Q) What is “WDS (transparent bridge mode)”?

  1. “Wireless Distribution System” effectively forwards traffic over the link “as-is”, without manipulating the packet data. Use this if you are having trouble with connectivity over your link, or for best compatibility.

Q) Are the airMAX 5ac and the airMAX M series compatible with each other?

  1. M series (airOS 6) devices can connect to an airOS 8 device as an AP in legacy mode, but not in any other configuration.
